SPAM – I Hate it!
This was a product test out of necessity and that doesn’t happen much in my world, over the last 10 years the amount of spam that hits my multiple inboxes has risen by a shocking amount. But this year, 2017, has resulted in my taking positive action to reduce the amount of time I waste every day by cleaning and filtering by email.
On the 13th May 2017 I received 68 emails on just one of several email accounts that I need on a daily basis; twenty five were work related, the other 43 I could have lived my life without seeing.
It probably took me 10 minutes to sort through those emails to identify the 25 that I needed to read and consider a reply to. I work 6 or 7 days a week, so lets say 6 days for ease of calculation, that makes 60 minutes a week that I waste on spam, 52 hours a year. I charge £50 + VAT per hour on labour, that’s £2,600 + VAT in lost billable time!
SPAM Costs us more than money.
Sorting through spam is not just costly in time and money, it is can cause stress, frustration and may increase the risk of accidentally clicking on a link that infects your computer/network. Making mistakes is easy when you are rushed, under pressure or just plain tired.
Infecting your computer will of course result in your friends and colleagues risking infection, a lot of malware will still try to access your contact list and send emails to them as if they came from you. This increases the risk of your contacts computers becoming infected and of course it looks like you initiated the infection. How long will your friends put up with that?
Have I managed to reduce the SPAM?
Well today so far I have had 60 emails in my inbox, of which not one was SPAM, that’s right, I have lots of emails but now I don’t have any Spam. That is a major relief, no dating sites, no pill pushing sites, no biological enhancements (how did they know??), no plastic surgery, none. Just emails that I need to respond to in some way.
So what was the solution that allowed me to become more productive?
Tiny isn’t it? But it packs a punch.
I’ve been using Office 365 and the mail spam filtering is turned up as high as I dare without getting legitimate emails from being stopped, but SPAMfighter has really made all the difference.
For me, everything worked “right out of the box”, no configuration apart from giving it an email address to protect, and away we went, the application window show below is self explanatory really and I haven’t had to touch anything, but just in case you do need to adjust anything you can alter all sorts of settings without screwing anything major up.
One thing that I was really pleased about was the integration with Outlook.
Spam fighter will integrate with Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail.
The SPAMfighter integration within Outlook is very clean and simple, as you can see below, there is a small SPAM fighter section with Block, Unblock and More.
Right clicking an email also reveals a Block Unblock menu addition at the bottom of the list.
Don’t be fooled into believing that this application is just too simple to work, being simple is one of the strengths, after all, you don’t want to have to spend hours configuring it to get it to do what you want it to do.
And that, is the key, it does what it is meant to do and does it well.
This is one of the best investments I have ever made, and what’s best of all is that it didn’t break the bank either, cost effective, efficient and down and out brilliant at getting rid of spam.
